Our Campaign Continues!
Dear friends and comrades,

Last week, the Khimki hostages, Maxim Solopov and Alexei Gaskarov, were released from police custody on their own recognizance by the Khimki municipal court.

The fact that we secured their release is important, but it is still not a complete victory. We must redouble our efforts and continue our campaign because:

* The criminal case against Alexei and Maxim has not been closed. If they are tried and convicted, they could face up to seven years in prison.
* Prosecutors have now formally charged Alexei and Maxim (with disorderly conduct) and are demanding that the activists be returned to jail pending trial.
* Prosecutors have now added other social activists to the list of possible defendants and suspects in their investigation of the July 28 demonstration in Khimki. If charged and convicted, these activists could also receive lengthy terms in prison.
* The law enforcement officials responsible for the coercion and torture of witnesses during the course of the investigation have not yet been charged or punished for their actions.
* In the recent past, there have been cases in Russia where an accused person has been released pending trial (the same procedure that led to the release of Maxim and Alexei last week) only to later wind up behind bars again with a hefty prison sentence. For example, the Siberian trade union activist Valentin Urusov was released on his own recognizance after an appellate court overturned his conviction (on a fabricated drugs possession charge) in May 2009, but in June of the same year the original lower court reaffirmed its verdict and sentenced him to six years in prison. A higher court later reduced this sentence only to five years.

Therefore, we must force the Russian authorities to drop all charges and close their criminal investigation.

As before, we call on you to join us in the struggle for Alexei and Maxim’s freedom. That is why we renew our appeal for you to join us in the International Days of Action scheduled for November 12–15, when we will be demanding that the authorities close their criminal case and free Alexei and Maxim unconditionally.

A Call for International Days of Action in Support of Alexei Gaskarov and Maxim Solopov

September 17–20, 2010

On July 28, 2010, more than two hundred young antifascists and anarchists carried out a spontaneous demonstration outside the town administration building in Khimki, a suburb of Moscow. They demonstrated in defense of the Khimki Forest, which was at that time in the process of beings cutting down for the needs of big business. The demonstration, during which several windows were broken, received a great deal of public attention. The authorities responded with a wave of repressions. The day after the demonstration, two well-known social activists, Alexei Gaskarov and Maxim Solopov, were arrested. They are now threatened with up to seven years in prison for disorderly conduct, although there is no evidence of their complicity in illegal activities. Meanwhile, the police continue to hunt down and harass other activists, especially those involved in the antifascist movement.

We ask you to hold protests outside of Russian Federation embassies, consulates, trade missions, and cultural centers, as well as at public events and concerts connected to Russia. We also ask you to send faxes, e-mails, and protest letters to the court, the prosecutor’s office, and the country’s political leadership. In the very nearfuture we will inform you of addresses where you can send these protests as well as more details about the ongoing repressions in Russia. Look for this information on our website http://khimkibattle.org in English, German, Russian, and French.

Lazy Activist Action Re:Seal Hunt
This is the lazy activist action- at the very least all you have to do is "sign" the letter that is already written and cc'ed to the appropriate senators.
Please take just a minute to do so!

Urge Senators to Second the Harb Seal Bill

On March 3rd, Senator Mac Harb introduced an historic bill to end the commercial seal hunt in Canada. For the first time, Canadians can support a legislative initiative in our own country that would save hundreds of thousands of defenseless seal pups each year from the end of a club or a bullet.

Senator Harb has just a few more weeks to find another Senator to second his bill. If the bill is seconded, it must be publicly debated - marking the beginning of the end for this cruel hunt. Please write these five Senators asking them to show their courage by stepping up to the plate and seconding the Harb Seal Bill.

15 European countries have banned foie gras production. California has passed a law banning the sale and production of foie gras effective 2012. It's time to make Ottawa foie gras free! We can't wait for legislators to do it, we have to make it happen ourselves one restaurant at a time. Come join us this Sunday at noon outside Domus Cafe in the Byward Market. Let's remind chef and owner John Taylor that we won't stand for his profiting from animal torture.

I'm writing this to see how accurate I can be. I will follow up this post with comments in December 2009. Anyone else want to do the same?

2009 is just around the corner. Rioting and arson by Muslims has broken out in Sweden again.

The year will begin with massive lay-offs, as consumption dwindles. As inventories pile up, production lines will be shut down. Defaults on credit cards and mortgages will accelerate by March.

Initially, Obama will set off a flurry of hope, but this will prove too little too late by summer. As people get hungry and desperate, civil unrest will rise around the globe. Sweden will be a template for immigrant violence.

Next winter will be harsh for the unemployed and homeless. Currency will either be in short supply or devalued by inflation.

In a vaccum of power, self-defence by individuals will be necessary.

add_a_radical is a community in which its purpose is to link individuals together with common interests in the political spectrum--in particular the radical and revolutionary edges of the table. I created this community in the hopes of making new friends with similar views; as well as having the chance to meet different people who have varying experiences in life--I feel everyone should have a priority in their life that demands for them to speak their mind, and exercise freedom of expression and 'out of the box' thinking. I feel that most of the "Add_me" communities meant for meeting new writers on livejournal are somewhat lacking in these uniting interests, and thus, have felt obliged to create such a community as this one.

Hopefully this community will prove useful as a resource for activists and thinkers to meet new bloggers with common ideas.

Thank you for taking the time to read your invitation to the LRNC!

Oxfam Canada - How to build and support women's leadership around the world?
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
National Arts Centre, Ottawa at 8:00pm
Last month Rwanda elected more women than men to parliament. Meanwhile feminists around the world are under attack. Increasing women’s transformative leadership fosters justice, peace and economic rights. It is both a means and an end. But do women in public power make a difference? How should they be supported? When there is a backlash, how do we best respond? How can power be transformed? This panel of eminent leaders and thinkers will address these critical questions and examine how we – as change agents and active citizens – can best strengthen women’s voice and power in a fast changing world.

Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland, former UN Human Rights Commissioner, and founder of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Global Initiative. Sandra Morán, Director of the Sector de Mujeres, Guatemala, that works for women’s economic development, in the struggle against violence against women, impunity and ‘femicide’.
Mahnaz Afkhami, President of Women’s Learning Partnership, Former Minister of State of Women’s Affairs in Iran and leading advocate for women’s rights and founder of several international organizations. John Gaventa, Institute of Development Studies, UK and renowned writer and practitioner on issues related to power, participatory development and governance, civil society and social change.

Voting ABC is as easy as 1-2-3
Here are some basic ABC guidelines that will work wonders if we're all on the same page:

1. If you live in a riding that went Liberal, NDP or Bloc in the last election, vote for that party.
2. If you live in a riding that elected a Conservative, vote for the party that came second.
3. Vote for Elizabeth May if you live in her riding.

Now get your family and 10 friends to do the same. Let's vote out the Regressive Conservatives!

War of Georgia

Hi, this video is directed to an American public and the rest of civilized Western world. I am a Russian citizen, I live in United States for a long time, for over 10 years. I happened to be in Russia now and I caught all this "action" that's taking place in South Ossetia, a region in Georgia. I never posted on youtube, but I couldn't hold myself from doing it now. I had to do this.
My message to American public is meant as a wake up call. American and other Western media especially CNN is feeding you complete horse shit! Russia did not invade and did not attack Georgia. It was a response to a horrible war crime committed by Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, this irresponsible man who just can't stand Russia, hates us, and will kiss America's and Europe's ass just to get a chance to join NATO and European Union. America has always supported Georgian "democracy" and I suspect actually that it was America who instigated Georgia to commit this crime.... on the first day of Olympics! How ironic is that? But please don't take this allegation too close heartedly, my point is not about whether or not U.S. government had any role in this, my point is to give you truth about what really happened Thursday night

So again, Russia did not invade or attack Georgia, as your media outlets are saying.

A brief geography and history lesson. South Ossetia is a very small region about 40 miles by 40 miles in the northern Georgia. It's population is around 70000 people. It borders with Russia. Today, many of the residents of South Ossetia are Russian citizens holding Russian passports, it's our people. South Ossetia had claimed independence from Georgia in 1992. Obviously it was never recognized by any international organizations. In 2006, they held an election where 99% of the voters supported independence from Georgia, and the turn out rate was 95%, it was monitored by a team of 34 international observers from the West. It still was not recognized by the world. As an analogy I would like to bring Kosovo situation, Serbian region in the south that was illegally snatched from Serbia and made into an independent country. Please look it up on Wikipedia and see how similar this situation is. How ironic is that America never supported Southern Ossetia same way it supported Kosovo. Obviously, it was made to show Russia how unfriendly the rest of the world is towards us.

Thursday night, Georgian military started an attack against South Ossetia. It was yesterday. They shelled the main city of Tshinkvali. They killed over a 1000 people. The excuse was to "restore the constitutional order in the region". BULLSHIT! This attack was an attempt to commit "ethnic cleansing", it was an act of genocide. They shelled civilian houses, schools, hospitals, without any warning. They also captured several villages near Tshinkvali. Reports say that they attempt to kill anyone of the Ossetian nationality. It was a pure act of Genocide. Wake up!

Russia couldn't watch this atrocity happening to its own citizens. We had no choice but to bring in our military into the region and protect our people. Whatever happens next the world needs to know, that the cause of this conflict is Georgia and its president. Before you accept what your media tells you, before you get fired up by McCains irresponsible allegations and comments, try remember all the lies that American media had always fed you, try to read news from other media outlets, not russian, but other parts of the world, other than U.S. or U.K.'s media.

America needs to wake up and stop doing what it's doing. Stop seeing an enemy in Russia. Stop using countries like Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Estonia who are basically acting like prostitutes of U.S. government in their public acts of hatred towards Russia.

And finally need to say, Mr. SSHAshvili that's how we like to call him. S.SH.A stands for U.S.A in Russian. Mr. SSHAshvili will pay for what happened yesterday.

Take action against Bill C-484! Protect Women's Rights and Equality
Reject Bill C-484. Protect women's choice and equality.

Last March, Bill C‑484, the Unborn Victims of Crime Act, passed second reading in the House of Commons. This bill seeks to amend the Criminal Code and to create a separate offence for causing the injury or death of an “unborn child” should a pregnant woman be the victim of a crime. Although defenders of this bill claim they want to better protect pregnant women against violence, what is really at stake here is the legal recognition of the fetus' right to life and the possible re-criminalization of abortion.

The adoption of Bill C‑484 would thus introduce a huge change in our law that would undoubtedly result in massive intrusions in the lives of pregnant women, as has been the case in those states in the U.S. that have adopted similar legislation.

Last January, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Morgentaler decision that struck down the Criminal Code provisions that made abortion a crime in Canada. This historic Supreme Court decision recognized that women's constitutional rights to security of the person, autonomy and freedom include the right to end an unwanted pregnancy without state interference. We must now take action to protect this right.

The fact that Bill C‑484 received second reading in the House of Commons is cause for great concern, and victory is far from certain. Indeed, the bill has now been referred to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. After hearing representations from groups and individuals, the Committee will determine whether the bill should be sent to the House of Commons for a final vote. If the bill is adopted at third reading, it will then be referred to a Senate committee that will ultimately decide whether to pass or defeat it.

This is why it is important that we take a stand now to defend women's reproductive rights. This is a question that goes to the heart of women's equality, dignity and human rights.
